The v-shaped lines represent the groupings of these subdivisions into groups of two and three. The groups of two are above, and three below. The number of possible pathways along these lines, moving across the four beats on either the upper or lower pathways, exactly equals the number of of four-beat patterns listed in the book. The diagram is the visual proof of this, as every possible grouping of two and three is clearly displayed, and following a continuous path will ensure that no grouping overlaps, and that every permutation is represented.
