Teaching

Miles Okazaki currently teaches guitar and jazz improvisation at Princeton University. His previous appointments include Associated Faculty at the University of Michigan from 2013 to 2022, The Banff Centre (2012–2015), private lessons and workshops at The New School, Queens College, The Juilliard School, and dozens of master classes in institutions in the United States, Europe, and Asia. His subjects are guitar, improvisation, composition, music theory, and rhythmic studies. In this last area, he has developed a large body of materials that use clapping, singing, and memory to expand rhythmic musicianship.

Musicians interested in his approach are invited to explore his book, and a collection of free instructional videos. For work on standard repertoire, see the instructional videos made for My Music Masterclass. Okazaki also maintains a Patreon page which is a video journal of his work on adapting the compositions of Thelonious Monk to guitar. Online lessons are unavailable at this time.
